You're reading about a promising new study, and somewhere in the coverage is a word you might have skimmed past: preprint. It sounds like a technicality. It isn't. Whether a study has been peer-reviewed is one of the fastest ways to judge how much weight to give it — so here's what the difference actually means.
What peer review actually is
Before most studies appear in a scientific journal, the journal sends them to a handful of independent experts in the same field. These reviewers pick the paper apart: Are the methods sound? Do the results support the conclusions? Is anything missing or overstated? The authors usually have to fix problems, run more analysis, or soften their claims before it's published. It's a quality check — imperfect, but real.
What a preprint is
A preprint is a study the authors have posted publicly before that review happens — often on sites like medRxiv, bioRxiv, or arXiv. Nobody independent has vetted it yet. Scientists share preprints so that findings can circulate quickly, which is genuinely useful — but it means you're reading a first draft, not a checked-and-approved result.
Why it matters for you
Peer review catches errors: a miscalculation, an overhyped conclusion, a missing control group. A preprint hasn't been through that filter, so its claims can be exactly right, badly wrong, or anywhere in between — and you have no outside signal telling you which. During fast-moving events, plenty of preprints that made dramatic headlines were later corrected or quietly withdrawn once experts looked closely.
How to tell which you're reading
- Check the source. URLs or logos with "medRxiv," "bioRxiv," "arXiv," "SSRN," or "Research Square" are preprint servers.
- Look for a journal name and a "published" or "accepted" date. A named journal with a publication date usually means it cleared peer review.
- Watch for a banner. Preprints often carry a line like "this preprint reports new research that has not been certified by peer review."
- Notice the hedging in the news. Phrases like "in a study that has not yet been peer-reviewed" are the tell.
Preprints aren't worthless — just unfinished
This isn't a reason to dismiss preprints. A lot of important science shows up as a preprint first, and peer review is no guarantee of truth either — flawed studies get published all the time. The point is calibration: treat a preprint as an early, promising signal rather than a settled conclusion, and give extra weight to findings that others have since confirmed.

Peer-reviewed means other experts checked it before publication. Preprint means they haven't yet. Neither is a stamp of absolute truth, but knowing which one you're looking at tells you how firmly to hold the finding — and how loudly to repeat it.
